Most recently, the MSS-10 was the main vocal mic preamp used throughout "The Ragpicker's Dream," Mark Knopfler's eagerly awaited third solo album, which Ainley recorded, mixed and co-produced with the artist. The MSS-10 has become the go-to mic preamp for lead vocals on all of Ainley's tracking projects at his Nashville-based BackStage Studio. "I put the best mic preamp on the most important thing, which for most of the stuff I do is the vocals. On practically everything that I've done for the last year the vocals have been run through it. The MSS-10 doesn't get a chance to get used on much else because it's always dedicated to that." Ainley has been using the MSS-10 for many months on various projects, including a George Strait album, he says. "I had it for some time and kept refusing to give it back, and eventually had to pay for it. I guess that tells you I liked it enough to spend my own hard-earned money on it!" For the Knopfler album, which Ainley reports has occupied him for most of the past year, "We tried different preamps but I stuck with the MSS-10. All the vocals were done with that preamp. We went through every microphone you could imagine on Mark's vocal. It was quite a picture - there was a wall of microphones. We ended up with a Telefunken 251 microphone and it sounded spectacular." "The Ragpicker's Dream" was released worldwide on September 30, 2002. Ainley has mixed, engineered and produced projects for many major artists, including Peter Frampton, Trisha Yearwood, Travis Tritt, George Strait, Toby Keith, Vince Gill and Martina McBride. He also supplied his mixing services to the Dixie Chicks' Grammy(r) Award-winning album, "Wide Open Spaces." Media contact:
